Celebrating “It is Finished”

April 25, 2022

It’s hard to believe two Sundays ago was Easter, the day we celebrate Jesus’ resurrection. To those who aren’t Christians and even to us who are, when the Easter egg hunts and Easter dinners are over, the celebration, fading into a sweet memory, could feel as if it has hardly been here at all. The happenings in our daily lives, once again taking center stage in our hearts and minds, try to crowd out the amazing truth of what happened a little over two thousand years ago when on the cross Jesus said, “It is finished.”

For when Jesus spoke those words, the war between good and evil was over. When God, the Father raised Jesus from the dead, God’s victory—like a rising sun that will never set—rang out over sin and death for all eternity. And forevermore in our lives, if we would believe Him.

That’s what Jesus asks us to do. (See John 6:29.) He asks us to jump wholeheartedly into His promises as if they are lifeboats to a sinking ship…even when they are a warning spoken in love….

As a parent tells their child what not to do, to save them from pain and hurt, so the Lord speaks to us. “For the wages of sin is death,…” but in the same sentence continues “…but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:23, ESV

Jesus IS:

  • The Way, the Truth, and the Life. He is the gateway to a restored relationship with God. No one comes to Father God except through Jesus. (See John 14:6.)
  • Our Peace. For He took our sinfulness upon Himself and, in turn, put His righteousness in us.
  • God’s Presence with us. If we have truly come to know Him as our Savior and Lord, He lives in our hearts. And is with us. In everything we face. This point came alive to me recently when reading Day 2 of this devotional. (Also, and more importantly, see Psalm 23.)

As we begin to understand what Jesus meant when He said, “It is finished,” the Lord’s Sabbath rest—like a light turning on in the darkness—will begin to permeate every cell of our being bringing peace and comfort beyond what we can imagine or think.

All that is left for us to do is submit to the Lord, trusting Him—“…as the author and finisher of our faith…” (See Hebrews 12:2.) He will do what He promises.

Jesus is gracious beyond what we can imagine or think. I do believe that throughout all eternity we will be unwrapping and celebrating the meaning of those three miraculous words, It is finished. For they are the Good News of the Gospel.

Heavenly Father, may the light of Your face shine upon us as we look to Jesus. Bless You. Praise You, Lord! Thank You for Your magnificent grace, faithfulness, and unending love. In Jesus name, Amen.

In His love,
Kimberly
